The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele said the apex bank has no plan to extend the phasing out of the old naira notes beyond February 10.
Call is rife to shift forward again the discontinuation of the old notes due to the scarcity of the redesigned notes causing widespread cash crunch and distressing many.
However, Emefiele at a briefing in Lagos, said the deadline is sacrosanct, adding that all hands are on deck to make the notes generally available in no time.
“I want to say unfortunately again, this time, we will not be looking at extension of deadline because we are the central bank and the deposit money banks are doing everything to address the challenges,” the CBN governor said.
He appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience, urging those protesting to desist.
His word, “We are doing our work. We are bankers. Those holding protest should not allow themselves to be used.”
