The match ended in favour 1-0 of the home side – thanks to super-sub Alex Iwobi who scored eight minutes after he replaced Moses Simeon.
With the victory, the Eagles booked a place in Russia 2018 and threw its fans into wild jubilation.

But for families and friends of five people, who reportedly lost their lives at the stadium, the match has left them devastated.

Punch reports that the deceased fans died in a stampede that occurred at one of the stadium entrance when fans were trying to force their way into the stadium to see the game, and security personnel including soldiers fired tear gas at them and beat them up.

“The fans, who were at the stadium to watch a match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Chipolopo of Zambia were allegedly beaten by soldiers at the gates of the stadium with heavy sticks. The stampede occurred as the crowd tried to avoid the soldiers’ sticks.

“The bloodstains were around the gate of the stadium,” the paper reported.
