The first baby to be born through In Vitro Fertilisation(IVF) in Nigeria, Miss Hannatu Kupchi, has gained admission into a Hungarian University to study medicine.
In vitro fertilization or fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body, in glass. The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman’s ovulation process, removing an egg from the woman’s ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a liquid in a laboratory. The fertilised egg is cultured for 2–6 days in a growth medium and is then implanted in the same or another woman’s uterus with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy.
Dr. Ibrahim Wada who supervised the process on February 11, 1998, at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja broke the news of Hannatu’s admission on Sunday evening in Abuja during an award reception and presentation held in honour of her.
“I barely made it beyond the cut off mark. God helped me. I am going to try my best and make everyone proud. I am studying medicine because I want to be a doctor. I want to study it because I want God to use me to help families who suffer what my parents went through,” Hannatu Kupchi who was born through IVF 17 years ago and became the first Nigeria’s test-tube baby said at the occasion.
