The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw all the sanctions Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, imposed on Niger Republic.
NEF made this charge on Tuesday in Abuja at a press conference it held where the group’s Director of Advocacy and Public Affairs, Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed spoke.
It said, the admittance of its plea by Tinubu would help in promoting negotiations between ECOWAS and the military junta.
According to Ahmed: “Nigeria should remove all sanctions and other measures intended to force the government and people of Niger into acquiescence.
“The use of force against Niger should be ruled out. It is unlikely to achieve the goals of restoring constitutional order and improving the frontiers of democratic systems in West Africa. It will compound the security and humanitarian crises in the ECOWAS region.”
