National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has been thrown into mourning following the shocking death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State.
Marafa was killed on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while returning from Gusau, according to the university.
The university confirmed his death in a notice signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi.
The brief statement said Marafa’s death followed a shooting incident, although the university did not disclose exactly where the attack occurred, what led to it or who was responsible.
It said information available to the institution indicated that the bursar was shot while returning from Gusau.
His sudden death has plunged the NOUN community into mourning, coming only days after he assumed the position of University Bursar in September 2026.
Marafa was described by the university as a dedicated administrator who served meritoriously and held several positions of responsibility during his career.
Mourning his death, the university described him as a distinguished colleague, committed administrator and valued member of the NOUN family.
The institution expressed condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and other mourners, praying that Allah would give them the strength to bear the loss.
NOUN said details of his burial would be announced after arrangements were concluded by the family.
It also prayed that Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
