Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, has asked people of Southeast extraction across the country to shun the planned nationwide protest in respect of prevalent hunger.

The protest scheduled for August has been divisive.

The Igbo elders on their part called on Igbos to shun it via a statement released by the group’s Secretary-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro.

In it, the latter warned Igbos to steer clear of the protest saying the Igbos have always been at the receiving end of such venture in the country.

According to him, “Ali Must Go” protests, the 1989 anti-SAP riots, the 1993 June 12 protests, the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protests, and the 2020 EndSARS protests, where the Igbo reportedly faced significant losses of lives and property.”

He also argued that the current insecurity plaguing the Southeast won’t augur well for protest.

“First and foremost, the prevailing security challenges in the Southeast region pose insurmountable obstacles to the safe conduct of protests and riots.

“In recognition of this reality, any nationwide protest scheduled within the Southeast is hereby revoked, with a clear directive that the Igbo will not partake,” he remarked.
