Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has been released on bail after being interrogated by the police over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
Okorocha, who represented Imo West Senatorial District in the Senate, was reportedly arrested on Monday night at the REIZ Continental Hotel in Abuja.
He was said to have spent about an hour in police custody before being released, with a directive to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning.
The police action reportedly followed the former governor’s failure to honour previous invitations in connection with the investigation.
Okorocha was initially asked to appear at the Force Headquarters on September 2. However, the appointment was rescheduled to September 8 following a request by his lawyers.
He reportedly failed to honour the rescheduled invitation, prompting the police to take further steps to secure his appearance. Reports also indicated that the police obtained a bench warrant in connection with the matter.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, was reported to have confirmed the arrest and subsequent release.
However, attempts to independently verify details of the interrogation were unsuccessful, as the police spokesperson did not respond to calls.
The police have yet to publicly provide details of the alleged forgery, impersonation and conspiracy or explain the specific circumstances behind the accusations.
Okorocha has not been reported to have been formally charged with any offence in connection with the investigation.
The investigation is said to be ongoing, with the former governor expected to return for further questioning.
