Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has expressed worry about the spate of deaths among lawmakers across the country.

Prof. Yakubu, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance to defend the commission’s 2017 budget, said that on the average a lawmaker dies every month.

He said that the undesirable circumstance has deeply affected the commission’s financial position.

His word, “For instance, in the last one year, we have conducted 13 unscheduled by-elections caused by deaths of some members of national and state assembly, meaning that on the average, a member of the national or state assembly dies every month.”

Not few lawmakers have died. And they include Late Hon. Omawumi Beatrice Udoh of Delta State House of Assembly, Late Jeffry Dashe, who represented Quanpan north constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, and a member of the Federal House of Representatives, representing Ifako Ijaiye Constituency, Lagos State, Hon. Elijah Adewale.
