Senator Adams Oshiomhole has accused former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi of keeping his money in a tax haven and failing to pay taxes in Nigeria.

Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, made the allegation on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, questioning Obi’s economic credentials and his ability to offer Nigerians an alternative to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The former Edo State governor, who described Obi as a trader, argued that his approach to economic management was driven by short-term gains rather than long-term national development.

“Do you know that Peter Obi has not paid tax in Nigeria? He kept his money in a tax haven,” Oshiomhole alleged.

He further claimed that Obi had admitted to the allegation, insisting that he was not making an unsupported accusation.

Oshiomhole also challenged Obi to explain how his proposed economic policies would differ from those of the Tinubu administration, particularly on taxation, fuel subsidy removal, student loans and foreign exchange management.

He questioned whether the former Anambra governor would scrap the student loan scheme introduced by Tinubu or return the country to a multiple exchange rate regime if elected president.

According to him, Obi has failed to provide clear answers on the policies he would retain or reverse.

The senator also accused Obi of inconsistency over fuel subsidy removal, recalling that he had supported the policy but later appeared to disagree with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over the possibility of restoring the subsidy.

Oshiomhole maintained that leadership required politicians to be courageous enough to communicate difficult economic decisions to Nigerians rather than promise policies aimed at winning immediate popularity.

“The most important thing about leadership is being courageous enough to tell your followers, your countrymen and women, the truth. However bitter that truth is,” he said.

He insisted that Obi had not presented a convincing alternative to Tinubu’s administration, arguing that a statesman should prioritise long-term national development over short-term economic gains.

Obi governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 and contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, finishing third behind Tinubu and Atiku.

He subsequently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress and emerged as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election in May 2026.
