The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has removed Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, in a dramatic shake-up just as political tension builds ahead of the state’s governorship election.

The hitherto Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan was ordered out of the Osun Command through a “Most Immediate” police wireless signal issued by the Force Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday.

The directive, referenced TH.5361/FS/FHQ/ABJ/SUB.7/, was circulated to police formations and departments nationwide, including the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Department of Operations, Department of ICT, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police across Zones 1 to 17, state police commands and other specialised units.

The signal stated that the Inspector-General had approved Gotan’s redeployment to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for a special duty assignment.

It read: “INGENPOL HAS ORDERED THE POSTING OF COMPOL IBRAHIM GOTAN TO CP COMM OPS FHQ ABUJA ON SPECIAL DUTY W.E.F. X TREAT AS VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE.”

The order means Gotan will now report to the Commissioner of Police in charge of Communications Operations at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. Police commands across the country were directed to implement the posting immediately.

The July 30, 2026 wireless message was dispatched to all affected formations for urgent compliance.

The development sparked celebrations among allies of Governor Ademola Adeleke. The governor’s Special Assistant on Digital Media, Oni Gbenga Lawrence, and the spokesperson for the Adeleke Campaign Organisation, Pelumi Olajengbesi, hailed the decision on X.

“The Commissioner of Police in Osun State has been removed. We thank the Inspector-General of Police for listening to the voice of the people. The will of the people cannot be denied.

“Congratulations to the good people of Osun State,” the post read.

Gotan’s removal comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the governorship election, following accusations by the ruling Accord Party that the police commissioner was biased and working in favour of the opposition All Progressives Congress.
