Police speak on arrest on of ‘armed herdsmen’ in Edo

The report that four herdsmen found with ammunition were arrested in Edo has drawn reaction from the State Police Command.

Recall that sixteen armed men from Kano while heading to the state ahead of Sallah celebration were mobbed to death in Uromi, Edo State, on suspicion of being into kidnapping that is bedevilling the area.

The killings sparked outrage in Northern part of the country as contrary report claims the victims were hunters.

It has led to the arrest of fourteen persons suspected to have hands in the gruesome murders.

The latest news is that the social media has been flooded with account that four marauding herdsmen have been arrested in Edo State.

The news, the State Police Command threw light on by a statement its Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu released.

Yamu said contrary to report, the arrested persons were hunters, and were found with three Dane guns, six empty cartridges, three half-filled cartridges, four cutlasses and two daggers.

He gave their names as Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu.

“The Edo State Police Command is aware of misinformation on social media that four herdsmen armed with guns were arrested at Americanus Hotel on Osemwenkhae Street after Big Joe Motors, Ramat Park, Orogbeni Quarters and handed over to the police.

“The command wishes to inform the general public that four suspects: Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu, intercepted by a member of the Edo Security Network with three Dane guns, six empty cartridges, three half-filled cartridges, four cutlasses and two daggers were swiftly taken over by officers from the Ikpoba Hill Police Station.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that they are hunters, not herdsmen. They were from Doguwa in Kano State, heading to Uvbe community in Orhionwon Local Government Area of Edo State. Meanwhile, an investigation is ongoing.

“The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, wishes to use this opportunity to discourage residents of the state from circulating wrong information capable of causing unnecessary tension,” the statement read in part.
