Police Team Beat Up Organisers, Journalists Over Competition’s Prize Money

Organisers of 2023 Emir of Ilorin’s Cup were subjected to beating by policemen after the latter’s football team, Police Machine won the tournament.

The incident happened at the weekend in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

It happened at the conclusion of the grand final in which the Police team defeated Musty FC 1-0 to lift the trophy, sequel to the third place match between Okaa Sports FC and Adezzy FC which ended 1-0 in favour of the former, the report said.

The cash prizes of N1m, N750,000 and N500,000 for the first, second and third place teams respectively brought about crisis as the organisers promised to get back to the three teams.

This chagrined members of the Police Machine who insisted on getting their N1m Prize on the spot, and so vented their anger on the organisers and journalists by beating both.

Sources said the Chairman of Ilorin West Football Association and chairman of the competition’s organizing committee, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Owolabi Agbaji Wopa had a share of the beating.

Condemning the assult his men perpetrated, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, said investigation would be launched into it.
