The incident, which happened at Lafiaji town, the headquarters of Edu, according to eyewitnesses, followed a crisis that erupted over an uncompleted culvert and projects in the area.

It was said the irate youths were angry with the former governor-turned Senator, and representing Kwara North over his alleged failure to see to the completion of the culvert located with other projects on Lafiagi Road, around Sodo River, about four kilometres to Lafiaji town.

The uncompleted culvert, according to the aggrieved youths had caused deaths of about four persons in the area within a short time.

And on Friday night when Senator Lafiaji was coming into the town for the State Councils election held on Saturday, the youths blocked the road, insisting he was not going to make use of the culvert to get to the town unless he completed it on the spot.

Sources said it became a ding dong affairs as the Senator invited the DPO of the area whose plea to the angry youths fell on their deaf ears prompting the ex-governor to invite some soldiers.

The soldiers came to Senator Lafiaji’s rescue and escorted him to his residence but not without the youths putting up a fight and casualties recorded.

“The security personnel killed five persons, and the youths also avenged by setting the residential building of the senator on fire,” the source said.
