An Abuja Federal High Court has adjourned the murder case involving the former House of Representatives Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa till September 25.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this adjournment was made to give the state government the needed time to study the outcome of the police report on an allegation of murder against the lawmaker.
Following an oral plea by counsel to the governor and the state’s Attorney-General (A-G), M. K. Umar, to allow him to review Exhibit 10 (police report) appended to Doguwa’s additional and improved affidavit filed in response to their objection, Justice Donatus Okorowo delayed the issue.
While disputing with Afam Osigwe, SAN, who represented Doguwa, Umar stated that the state government was not hunting for the legislator because of the violence that transpired during the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections in Kano or because of the weapon problem.
Recall that Kano Police Command said it had handed over the case file of Doguwa’s murder case to the State government.
Doguwa was accused of killing some members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of the state during the February 25, 2023, Presidential/National Assembly elections.
The National Chairman of the NNPP, Prof. Rufai Alkali, had called on the police authorities to prosecute the lawmaker immediately, but reacting to the call, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, had said that the call was belated as the police had handed over the case file to the state counsel.
Alkali had expressed regret that Doguwa who was allegedly seen on a viral video with a shotgun, shooting at NNPP supporters and instigating attacks on the party’s facility in Kano state “is still walking the street as a free man.”
