Rivers governor Siminalayi Fubara has accused the police authorities in the state of taking sides with those plotting his impeachment.
The state is currently enmeshed in political crisis purportedly stemming from a relationship between the incumbent and his predecessor and Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike that is said to be soured.
The acrimony reached a boiling point on Sunday with the State House of Assembly set on fire amid report of moves to impeach Fubara on Monday.
The governor’s visit to the complex on Monday took further violent turn with tear gas and gunshots renting the air.
In the video of the moment that has gone viral, one person is heard accusing the police of tear gassing Fubara.
The latter while speaking on the incident accused the police of compromise so much so that a police chief allegedly shot at him saying, “The police have been compromised. The DC Operations shot at me. He directly shot at me. I don’t mind to die. At least it would be on record that one Fubara was killed for a struggle. I heard some people gathered here to do one rubbish, they can’t sit when there is trouble. Am the Chief Security Officer of the state. Am the one to create an alternative place for Assembly members to sit.”
