A bitter marital dispute over plans to take a second wife has reportedly ended in tragedy in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, with a pregnant woman arrested over the death of her husband.
The woman, identified as Bilkisu Sani, is alleged to have attacked her husband, Hafizu Gausu, during a heated dispute over his reported plan to marry another woman.
The incident occurred around 7pm on Friday in the Katsalle area of Rogo town.
Residents were said to have rushed to the scene after hearing Bilkisu crying out that her husband had been slaughtered.
But when they arrived, they reportedly found Gausu lying in a pool of blood with a severe injury to his head.
Sources said he appeared to have been struck with a hard object rather than slaughtered, adding that there was also an injury around his ear.
Police were quickly alerted and took the body away for investigation.
According to reports, trouble had been brewing in the couple’s home after Gausu allegedly became engaged to another woman and began making preparations to take her as his second wife.
The development reportedly triggered repeated quarrels between the couple, with Bilkisu allegedly opposed to the proposed marriage.
Family elders were said to have intervened several times in an attempt to settle the dispute, but the tension reportedly continued.
Sources further claimed that Gausu had asked his fiancée’s family to move the wedding forward by two months because of the opposition he was facing at home.
Police subsequently arrested Bilkisu as the prime suspect while investigations into the circumstances surrounding Gausu’s death continue.
The deceased was buried on Saturday morning in Rogo in accordance with Islamic rites.
Gausu and Bilkisu had reportedly been married for nearly seven years and had two children. Bilkisu is also said to be pregnant.
