Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has thrown his weight behind Nigeria’s Catholic Bishops, declaring that they have a long history of “telling truth to power” and have “never been partisan.”
Sani’s defence comes after Cardinal John Onaiyekan stirred controversy by accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing poor Nigerians and warning that the President appeared determined to win the 2027 election “by all means.”
The former Abuja Archbishop also claimed Tinubu was not getting the true picture of the hardship facing Nigerians.
The remarks triggered a sharp response from Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala, who accused Onaiyekan of being “more political than spiritual,” insisting he spoke only for Catholics and not all Christians.
Bwala also defended Tinubu’s handling of the economy, saying the President’s position was backed by facts and statistics.
But Sani hit back in a Saturday post on X, insisting the Catholic Bishops have remained fearless from the military era to successive civilian governments.
“From the era of Military rule and throughout the period of civilian Governments, the Catholic Bishops have a consistent history of telling truth to power,” he wrote.
He also dismissed claims that the bishops play politics, declaring: “They have never been partisan. Every President they visited, they bring him a gift of Bitter Kola instead of Olive Oil.”
The remark, likening the bishops’ message to bitter kola rather than the symbolic olive branch, has added fresh fuel to the growing war of words over the Church’s criticism of Tinubu’s government.
