What should have been a routine gold delivery turned into a nightmare after a Lagos gold seller alleged that policemen accused him of using his digital weighing scale for marijuana instead of gold before brutally attacking him.
The incident, which happened in the Festac area, exploded online after the trader shared videos showing his injuries and recounting his ordeal.
According to the victim, the officers stopped and searched him but found nothing incriminating. He said trouble started when they discovered the digital scale he uses to weigh gold.
The trader claimed the officers insisted the scale was used to measure cannabis and ordered him to follow them to the police station.
He alleged that he refused because he had done nothing wrong and became suspicious after noticing the officers were not properly dressed in police uniforms while the vehicle they arrived in had no registration number.
The gold seller further claimed the officers tried to force him into their vehicle, hit him on the head with a gun and assaulted him, leaving him with an injury near his eye. He also displayed the gold necklace he said he was delivering when the incident occurred.
In another video, the trader alleged that one of the officers ordered his colleagues to open fire before they fled the scene.
The viral clips sparked public outrage, forcing the Lagos State Police Command to act.
The command said the officers, identified as personnel attached to Area E Command, had been summoned on the orders of Commissioner of Police CP Tijani Fatai for investigation and possible disciplinary action.
Police also appealed to the gold seller to contact the Command’s Complaint Response Unit to assist with the ongoing probe.
