President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salary payments for retired Comptrollers-General (CGs) and Deputy Comptrollers-General (DCGs) of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has announced.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System Training at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the minister, the approval is part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of serving and retired personnel of agencies under the Interior Ministry.
He said retired Comptrollers-General previously received pensions of about N130,000, describing the amount as inadequate.
“Previously, CGs had a pension of about N130,000; it was not encouraging. But what did the President do? He signed and approved salary for life for CGs and DCGs,” the minister said.
Tunji-Ojo also credited Tinubu with clearing promotion backlogs across services under the ministry, claiming that at least 50,000 personnel had earned new ranks and positions within three years.
He further said the administration had increased recruitment, with no fewer than 40,000 personnel recruited in a single exercise, while also approving salary increases, hazard allowances and peculiar allowances.
The minister urged personnel to reciprocate the government’s interventions by improving their performance and ensuring better service delivery to Nigerians.
“Everything we have asked of him, he has done. This is the least we can do,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo described Tinubu’s policies as investments in the future, arguing that the President was more concerned with building lasting institutions than pursuing immediate gains.
He said the President recognised that he would not remain in office forever, but that the institutions being developed under his administration would continue to serve future generations.
“What this President is doing is planting the seed so that the future will be abundant,” the minister added.
