A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has convicted and sentenced five men to jail for spraying naira notes, an offence punishable under Nigerian law.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X account on Friday.

The convicts were identified as Ekweozor Divine, Udumeluo Godwin Chukwuebuka, Kennedy Uwadia, Godstime Ogie Eghosa and Bright Barry Imade.

According to the anti-graft agency, Justice F. A. Olubanjo convicted the five men on Thursday, October 15, 2026, over a one-count charge bordering on the abuse of naira notes.

The EFCC said the offence contravened Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 and is punishable under Section 21(1) of the same Act.

Spraying naira notes at weddings, birthday parties, burial ceremonies and other social gatherings is prohibited under Nigerian law, regardless of the occasion or the amount involved.

The convictions serve as another warning to Nigerians who routinely throw or spray cash during celebrations that the practice can attract criminal sanctions.
