The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has thrown open President Bola Tinubu’s credentials for public scrutiny as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.
The documents, displayed on Saturday alongside those of Vice President Kashim Shettima, include Tinubu’s university degree, NYSC discharge certificate, work history and other personal details submitted with his nomination papers.
Tinubu’s Form EC9 shows he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, graduating with honours on June 22, 1979.
The documents also reveal he completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Oyo State between December 1982 and November 1983.
His employment history lists Mobil Nigeria Limited, where he worked from 1983 to 1992 before leaving for “advancement,” his tenure as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007, and his current role as President since 2023.
However, the form leaves the years for his primary and secondary school education as “0000,” while only his university qualification is fully listed.
It also states that Tinubu was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos, gives his residential address as No. 4 Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, and describes his occupation as “politician.”
Shettima’s documents provide a full academic trail from primary school.
His records show he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978, finishing second in his class, before moving to Government Secondary School, Potiskum, where he obtained six WAEC credits and passes, including distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics.
He later earned a Second Class Upper degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in 1989 and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.
His NYSC certificate shows he served between October 1989 and October 1990.
INEC said the publication of the documents is in line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires the commission to publicly display the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates.
The documents are now available for inspection at INEC offices across the country, while members of the public can obtain certified true copies and challenge any alleged false declaration or forgery in court.
Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on August 19 under the commission’s revised timetable.
