Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has pulled the plug on electric vehicle charging on its campuses, banning the use of its electricity supply to power privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles.
The dramatic move came after the university raised the alarm over soaring electricity bills, accusing private EV users of adding pressure to its already stretched resources.
According to the institution, the widespread charging of electric bikes using university power had contributed significantly to a sharp increase in energy costs, creating a huge financial burden.
In a Tuesday statement signed by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, management declared that the practice was no longer acceptable.
“Charging privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles using the University’s electricity supply is no longer sustainable,” the statement said.
With immediate effect, staff members, students, commercial motorcycle operators and other electric vehicle owners have been ordered to stop charging their vehicles on university premises.
BUK warned that anyone caught violating the directive would face disciplinary action under the institution’s rules.
The university has also ordered provosts, deans, directors and heads of departments to monitor compliance, while a special monitoring team will patrol campuses to hunt for violators.
The institution said the crackdown was necessary to reduce energy expenses and ensure its resources are used responsibly.
