Private schools in Kano State may no longer have a free hand to increase tuition fees as the State House of Assembly has approved a new law requiring government approval before any hike.
The move is a major crackdown on arbitrary school fee increases and is aimed at protecting parents and guardians from sudden and excessive charges.
The Assembly passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026 during Monday’s plenary session after adopting the report of its House Committee on Education.
Under the new law, private and voluntary schools across the state cannot unilaterally increase tuition or other fees.
Any proposed increase must first be submitted to and approved by the appropriate regulatory authorities.
The legislation is also expected to strengthen the agency responsible for regulating private schools in the state.
It establishes the office of an Executive Secretary for the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, with the aim of improving its administration and operational effectiveness.
The bill followed public hearings and consultations with key stakeholders organised by the House Committee on Education before lawmakers considered and passed it.
Speaker of the Assembly, Ismail Falgore, commended his colleagues for their contributions to the legislative process.
He described the amendment as an important reform that would improve the regulation and management of private educational institutions across Kano.
The Assembly said the new provisions are designed to shield parents from arbitrary fee hikes while forcing private schools to operate within a more transparent regulatory framework.
The development is expected to put private school operators on notice as the government moves to tighten regulation of the sector and protect families from unexpected increases in education costs.
