The Nigeria Police Force has put up defence for the strange payment of N100m into the personal bank account of son of outgone Inspector-General of Police, Victor Egbetokun by Anambra State Government.
Activist Omoyele Sowore had blown the whistle on the strange payment from the security vote of Anambra State.
Drawing reaction from the police Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, said it was all a banking error.
Hundeyin’s defence was contained in an interview he granted Channels Television programme, Politics Today, where he claimed that upon receiving the bank credit alert, the ex-IGP’s son took step to reverse the sum.
“You could remember when he (Omoyele Sowore) said N100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I called the son of the IGP immediately to know what was going on, and he explained.
“He said he saw N100 million in his account, and he told his accounts officer to reverse the money immediately, which he did,” he said.
The police spokesman added that Victor provided documentary proof that the funds were refunded, including a printed bank statement presented to the police authorities.
“He printed out his statement of account. He showed me. The young man was forced to close down that account. He has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for that allegation to be investigated,” he added.
The police spokesperson argued that the funds were traced to an error and were promptly reversed to the sender following the discovery.
