The Chairman of Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, Mustapha Mohammad Kukawa, has sponsored the marriage of 10 vulnerable couples from Baga and Doro communities in a move aimed at promoting morality and curbing social vices among youths.
The mass wedding, conducted in accordance with Islamic rites, was organised by the council, which reportedly covered the essential expenses required for the ceremonies.
According to a statement issued by the local government’s media team on Saturday, the chairman personally presided over the wedding Fatiha for the beneficiaries.
The council provided dowries, known as Sadaki, as well as arrangements for the Waliyyi (marriage guardians), kolanuts, sweets and payments due to Islamic clerics who officiated at the ceremonies.
The initiative was designed to support less-privileged couples who might otherwise struggle to meet the financial demands of getting married.
The council described the exercise as an effort to protect the dignity of young people, encourage lawful marriages and discourage social vices within the communities.
It also said the mass wedding was the first of its kind in Borno State in recent times, adding that the exercise would be conducted in phases, with another batch expected to follow.
The statement noted that the initiative was modelled after mass wedding programmes previously introduced by the Kano State Government.
Following the wedding ceremony, the chairman hosted a Walima, a traditional Islamic marriage reception, in the evening. The event attracted a large gathering of residents, community groups and other well-wishers who joined the couples in celebrating their marriages.
The parents and relatives of the brides and grooms reportedly expressed gratitude to the council chairman for sponsoring the ceremonies and easing the financial burden on the families.
Community members also praised the initiative, describing it as an intervention aimed at supporting young couples and safeguarding their dignity.
Among those who attended the ceremony were the council’s Vice Chairman, Musa Mamman; councillors; local government officials; traditional rulers; Islamic clerics; political associates and other community representatives.
