Confusion has continued to trail the shocking incident involving Katsina United defender Izoh Chinedu, after reports emerged that the young footballer, who was pronounced dead following a collapse during a pre-season friendly, was later “resurrected”.
The strange development sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria’s football community, with many questioning how a player declared dead could later be moved from a mortuary to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further observation.
However, fresh details have revealed that the player was not confirmed to have regained life after death, but that his family insisted on additional medical checks before accepting the initial declaration.
Spokesperson of the Katsina State Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Nasir Gide, disclosed on Wednesday that Chinedu’s parents requested that his body be taken from the morgue to the ICU and kept there for 24 hours.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina, Gide explained that the player collapsed during the match and was later pronounced dead by relevant authorities.
Following the announcement, his remains were deposited at the mortuary while arrangements were being considered.
But in an emotional move, Chinedu’s family demanded that the body be transferred to the ICU, where medical personnel would continue monitoring and carry out further procedures to confirm his condition before any burial plans were made.
“The parents wanted the body to be kept in the ICU for 24 hours to enable them and medical experts establish the true situation before taking further steps,” Gide explained.
He added that the ministry respected the family’s decision and was working with the relevant authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the player’s collapse and reported death.
The incident has left Katsina United officials, teammates, coaches and supporters deeply shaken, with many struggling to come to terms with the sudden tragedy.
