Ikeja Electric Plc has clarified its directive to customers to update their data by linking their tax identification numbers to it.
The announcement of the order stirred public outrage against the electricity distribution company and the federal government.
The company had said that failure to comply with the directive, erring customers paying electricity bills without data updates pertaining to TIN would face billing and service continuity problems.
Throwing lights on it, the company said it’s consistent with the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, and affected only corporate customers, vendors and strategic business partners.
This, the company stated in a public notice it issued on Thursday in which it declared that the development was part of efforts to align with new tax regulations and strengthen its internal risk management systems.
“The notice applies strictly to corporate customers (B2B), as well as our vendors and strategic business partners.
“This initiative is driven by compliance requirements under the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025 and related regulations, and also supports our internal KYC/KYCB risk management processes.
“Under the NTA 2025, supplier invoices (including those issued by Ikeja Electric) are required to carry prescribed details, including Ikeja Electric’s Tax ID and CAC Registration Number,” the statement read partly.
