Activist Aisha Yesufu has called on Nigerians to contribute money towards funding the 2027 presidential campaign of former Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that he cannot shoulder the financial burden alone.

Yesufu made the appeal in a video shared on X on Wednesday, urging supporters to make donations, regardless of how little, to what she described as a citizens-funded campaign.

She argued that Nigerians who wanted to reclaim the country must take responsibility for financing Obi’s ambition rather than leave everything to the former Anambra State governor.

According to her, citizens must demonstrate their commitment by contributing their widow’s mite to the campaign.

Recalling the 2023 presidential election, Yesufu said Obi was initially reluctant to accept public donations but she insisted that Nigerians should be allowed to participate financially in the campaign.

She maintained that the previous fundraising exercise was properly accounted for despite criticisms, adding that she was prepared to ensure transparency again in 2027.

Yesufu, however, clarified that the fundraising initiative was separate from the political party’s finances, explaining that donations to Obi’s campaign would go into a different account from contributions made directly to the party.

She urged Nigerians willing to support the project to donate to the designated campaign account, while those interested in funding the party should await its separate account details.

Yesufu stressed that the previous arrangement, in which Obi largely financed campaign activities, was no longer sustainable, insisting that supporters must now take ownership of the process.

She pledged to account for every contribution received, just as she claimed was done during the 2023 fundraising exercise, and urged Nigerians to rally behind the proposed citizens-funded campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
