An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has landed in court after allegedly attacking an Area Court judge with a cutlass during proceedings in Adamawa State.
Garba, from Korawa village in Fufore Local Government Area, was accused of violently attacking the presiding judge of Mayo-Ine Area Court, Hon. Dauda Hamman, on August 31, 2026.
The incident reportedly caused a stir at the courtroom as the elderly suspect allegedly wielded a cutlass and repeatedly struck the judge’s hand, leaving him with serious injuries.
According to the Adamawa State Police Command spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, the attack happened while the judge was handling a case involving Garba and another man, Ismail Yusuf.
Police operatives quickly arrested Garba after the alleged attack, while the case was later transferred from the Fufore Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola for further investigation.
Following the investigation, Garba was arraigned on Monday, September 8, before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng.
He faced a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt under Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
When the charge was read and interpreted to him, Garba reportedly pleaded guilty.
In a dramatic turn, the 87-year-old blamed the devil for his action and expressed deep regret over the incident.
The court subsequently ordered that Garba be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.
Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Hassan, assured that the police would pursue the case diligently to ensure that justice was served.
