The battle for Nigeria’s political future has officially entered a new phase as political parties and their candidates today begin full-scale campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

After months of behind-the-scenes consultations, political manoeuvring and grassroots mobilisation, the campaign curtains have been raised, opening the door for rallies, media battles, voter engagements and fierce political contests across the country.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had fixed Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as the commencement date for campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

The development is expected to trigger a fresh wave of political activities as major parties begin selling their messages, unveiling strategies and seeking the support of millions of Nigerian voters ahead of the crucial polls.

President Bola Tinubu’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and other political platforms are expected to intensify their efforts to win public support.

Already, political heavyweights have begun positioning themselves for the contest, with party leaders holding strategic meetings and mapping out campaigns aimed at securing victory in what promises to be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched elections.

Under the INEC timetable, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will run until January 15, 2027 — 24 hours before election day scheduled for January 16, 2027.

However, the campaign battle for governorship and State House of Assembly seats will begin later, with INEC fixing September 9, 2026, as the official start date for state-level campaigns.

Political analysts expect the coming months to witness intense debates over the economy, security, corruption, infrastructure, governance and the future direction of the country.

With the campaign whistle now blown, Nigeria’s political arena is set for months of drama, promises, alliances and high-stakes battles as parties race to capture the hearts and votes of Nigerians.
