Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay close attention to Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, amid rising tension, political violence and fears of possible disruption of the poll.
Davido’s appeal comes with the August 15 election just days away and follows a series of incidents that have heightened concerns over the safety of voters and the credibility of the exercise.
The singer, who is the nephew of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, has been deeply involved in his uncle’s re-election campaign, making his latest intervention particularly significant.
In May, Davido inaugurated a 43-member youth mobilisation team for Adeleke’s re-election bid and announced a two-month break from music to concentrate on the campaign. He was named chairman of the Imole Youth Campaign Mobilisation Team, which was tasked with mobilising young voters across the state.
He has also joined his uncle at campaign rallies, where he has used his star power to entertain supporters and rally young people behind the governor’s bid for a second term.
But with the election increasingly characterised by political tension and violence, Davido has now shifted his attention to the need for a peaceful poll.
Taking to X, the singer directly addressed Trump, urging the US President and the international community to monitor developments in Osun as voters prepare to elect their governor.
Davido said there were growing concerns about tension, violence, intimidation and possible disruption of the democratic process in the state.
He stressed that Osun residents must be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and peacefully without fear.
The singer also urged the United States and the international community to closely monitor the election and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and ensure that their votes are respected.
His intervention comes against the backdrop of several incidents that have cast a shadow over the election campaign, including reported shootings and clashes involving political supporters.
The violence has triggered growing concerns among political stakeholders and residents as the two leading camps intensify their battle for control of the state.
Davido, who has openly backed his uncle’s re-election, however, appealed for restraint, stressing that political differences should not be allowed to turn Osun into a battlefield.
He said the people of the state did not want bloodshed or intimidation but a peaceful, transparent and credible election.
The singer’s appeal has also injected a fresh international dimension into the increasingly heated Osun contest, coming just days before voters head to the polls.
With the election scheduled for Saturday, all eyes are now on security agencies and political actors to prevent further violence and ensure that voters can cast their ballots without fear.
