A fresh wave of violence has hit Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election after Dele Ayegbo, nephew of the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council in the state, Wole Oke, was reportedly shot dead in Esa-Oke.
Dele Ayegbo was said to have been killed on Thursday in the town, raising fresh concerns over escalating political tension and insecurity as parties intensify their final campaign activities ahead of the keenly contested poll.
The incident comes amid a series of violent clashes and security concerns that have trailed the election season in Osun, with rival political camps trading accusations over alleged attacks, intimidation and disruptions at campaign events.
In recent weeks, the state has witnessed a rise in political confrontations, including reports of gunshots, attacks on party gatherings and allegations of violence involving supporters of major political parties.
The APC and the Accord Party have repeatedly accused each other of fuelling tension, while security agencies have assured residents that measures are being taken to prevent a breakdown of law and order before, during and after the election.
