The Federal Government has warned that the 2027 general election could be postponed if the Ebola outbreak spreads widely enough to pose a serious threat to public health.

Dr Jide Idris, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), made this known during an interview on Channels Television, stressing that the severity and geographical spread of the outbreak would determine whether such a drastic measure would be necessary.

Idris, however, said there was no immediate reason to consider postponing the election, expressing hope that the outbreak would be contained before it disrupts the country’s electoral timetable.

He explained that although postponement remained a possibility in the event of a widespread outbreak, health authorities were optimistic that the situation would not escalate to that level.

The warning comes as political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with the possibility of a public health emergency raising fresh concerns about large political gatherings, campaigns and voting activities.

Idris insisted that any decision to postpone the polls would be based strictly on public health considerations and not political calculations.

He also dismissed suggestions that the government could use the Ebola outbreak as a political weapon, maintaining that health authorities would not allow disease control measures to be influenced by political interests.

According to him, Nigeria had been monitoring the Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the outbreak emerged, and had anticipated the possibility of the virus spreading into the country.

He identified population movement, international air travel and activities at the nation’s ports of entry as factors that could facilitate the importation of infectious diseases despite existing surveillance measures.

Idris explained that the possibility of Ebola reaching Nigeria had been considered during the country’s monitoring efforts, although authorities could not completely rule out its arrival.

He reiterated that the priority of health officials was to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission, rather than allow the situation to develop into a crisis capable of disrupting major national activities.

For now, the NCDC chief maintained that there was no need to contemplate postponing the 2027 election, but warned that the situation could change if the outbreak spread beyond manageable levels.
