Customers of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) can now make online payments more conveniently after the bank enabled its debit cards on Google Wallet for use with Google Pay.

The new service allows customers to pay for goods and services online without repeatedly entering their debit card details at checkout.

Under the arrangement, customers can add their GTBank debit cards to Google Wallet and select Google Pay when making eligible online payments, subject to the service’s availability and acceptance by merchants.

The option covers a range of transactions, including hotel and flight bookings, food orders, subscription payments, utility bills, membership renewals and purchases from online stores, both locally and internationally.

The development gives GTBank customers another digital payment option as banks and financial technology companies continue to expand electronic payment services.

Security features built into Google Pay are designed to help protect payment information during transactions, offering users an additional layer of protection when paying online.

Commenting on the launch, GTBank Managing Director, Miriam Olusanya, said the service was introduced in response to customers’ growing demand for simpler and more secure ways to make payments locally and abroad.

She explained that linking GTBank debit cards to Google Wallet would eliminate the need for customers to repeatedly enter their card details, making online transactions more convenient.

Olusanya added that the launch reflected the bank’s commitment to reducing the difficulties associated with everyday banking and developing digital solutions that fit customers’ changing lifestyles.

According to her, the service also aligns with the wider vision of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) to use technology to make financial services more accessible and easier to navigate.

The introduction of Google Pay adds to the digital payment options available to GTBank customers, particularly those who regularly pay for international subscriptions, travel bookings and other online services.

Customers will, however, need to ensure that their cards and the merchants they patronise support the service before attempting transactions.
