Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has banned his supporters and political associates from showering him with grandiose political titles, insisting that he should simply be addressed as “Mr Governor”.
Oyebanji specifically kicked against appellations such as “Jinx Breaker”, “History Maker”, “Owi Bee, Se Bee” and “Back to Back”, declaring that the era of political campaigns was over and it was time to focus on governance.
The governor issued the warning on Friday evening during the October edition of the monthly Evening of Praise and Worship programme at Lady Jibowu Hall, Government House, Ado-Ekiti.
He said he had tolerated the titles during the electioneering period but would no longer welcome them following his inauguration for a fresh term.
“I think we have to put an end to all these appellations. Election is over, and from today, just address me as Mr Governor. I don’t want to hear all these appellations such as ‘Jinx Breaker’, ‘History Maker’ and all the rest,” he declared.
Oyebanji warned against giving political leaders titles associated with God, insisting that all glory and praise should go to the Almighty.
“I don’t want anybody to equate me with God or give me an appellation that is an attribute of God,” he added.
The governor attributed the relative peace, stability and development recorded in Ekiti, particularly over the last four years, to God’s grace rather than his administration’s political achievements.
He expressed confidence that continued reliance on God would bring greater accomplishments to the state, urging residents to remain steadfast in their faith.
Describing the theme of the October worship programme as particularly significant, Oyebanji said it was the first edition since the inauguration of his new administration.
“We are just here to praise God, and I know that as we praise God on behalf of Ekiti State, He will speak to us and also step into our situation,” he said.
The governor’s intervention marks a clear attempt to draw a line between campaign-season praise-singing and the business of governance, as he urges supporters to drop the political appellations and address him by his official title.
