With the Osun governorship election fast approaching, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has deployed Commissioner of Police Erale Samuel Etaifo(pictured) to take charge of security operations across the state.
The move, announced on Friday by the Osun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, free and credible election.
According to Ojelabi, the deployment reflects the IGP’s determination to keep security agencies neutral while guaranteeing the safety of voters, electoral officials, election observers, journalists and critical election materials before, during and after the August 15 poll.
He said Erale Samuel Etaifo will lead election security operations alongside other security agencies and key stakeholders, ensuring strict compliance with the Electoral Act, the Code of Conduct for Security Personnel on Electoral Duty and other laws guiding the electoral process.
The police also assured residents that robust security measures had already been put in place across the state to protect lives and property throughout the election period.
In the statement, the command stressed that all officers deployed for election duty had been ordered to remain impartial, professional and respect the rights of every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.
The police, however, issued a stern warning to politicians and their supporters, declaring that anyone involved in electoral violence, vote buying, voter intimidation, spreading false information or any other election-related crime would face the full weight of the law.
Residents were urged to remain peaceful, cooperate with security agencies and report any suspicious activity through the command’s emergency channels.
Osun voters will head to the polls on Saturday, August 15, to choose a governor from 14 candidates, including the incumbent.
