Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has accused Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of being behind an alleged plot to assassinate him, following an attack on the venue of his New Delta Congress (NDC) campaign meeting in Uvwie Local Government Area.
Omo-Agege, who is the NDC senatorial candidate for Delta Central, made the allegation after suspected political thugs allegedly stormed the campaign venue in the early hours of Thursday, destroying canopies and campaign materials prepared for the event.
In a statement issued by his office, the former lawmaker claimed that more than 50 armed men allegedly led by Emmanuel Erube, the Development Committee Chairman of Jakpa, invaded the venue around 5:30am and threatened to kill him and his Uvwie campaign coordinator, Olorogun Dr Esere Ejifoma Atumu.
He alleged that the attackers warned that he would be killed if he appeared at the campaign event, describing the incident as a coordinated attempt to intimidate him and his supporters.
Omo-Agege accused Governor Oborevwori of having knowledge of the alleged plot, claiming that the governor had previously made threats against his life.
The former Senate deputy president alleged that the attack was part of a wider attempt to silence opposition voices in Delta State, describing it as an assault on democracy.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately arrest those allegedly involved in the attack and investigate those he accused of sponsoring the action.
Omo-Agege also demanded enhanced security protection for himself, his campaign coordinator, and members of his campaign team across the state.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), international observers, and civil society organisations to pay close attention to political developments in Delta ahead of the coming elections.
The allegation has further heightened the political rivalry between Omo-Agege and Governor Oborevwori, who defeated him in the 2023 Delta governorship election. Omo-Agege, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, later joined the NDC and has remained a major opposition figure in the state.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Oborevwori and security agencies had not issued an official response to Omo-Agege’s allegations.
