The Katsina State Government has called on the authorities in charge of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, to cancel the English language examination held last Wednesday.
Controversy has surrounded the examination.
It came from the paper’s late arrival at schools. More to the point, the exam originally scheduled to begin at 2pm did not start in some states until late into the evening resulting in the exercise dragging into 12.00am in some cases.
For visibility, some candidates had to write with the aid of lanterns, candle and torchlights while parents and guardians were thrown into panic for fears of their wards’ safety.
Against this backdrop, the Katsina government is calling for the cancellation of the examination.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in the state, Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa made this call during a visit to WAEC office in Katsina where she dropped a petition on the demands signed by Hajiya Ummukhair Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
At the occasion, Musa-Musawa lamented the unconducive condition the students endured in order to write the paper, saying: “Students had to write the examination at night without light until torch lights, handsets lights, security lights were provided.”
Recall that WAEC blamed the situation on heightened efforts to curb examination malpractice, particularly the leakage of question papers.
