What began as online ridicule over a university graduate’s appearance has ended with Nigerians rallying around him and raising N14 million to give him a fresh start.
Madumere Felix Nwachikerendu, popularly known on X as @Felix_the_SUG and nicknamed the “Peanut Seller,” became an overnight social media sensation after photographs from his final-year project defence at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, surfaced online.
The pictures, posted on August 31 by an X user identified as @vector_olal, quickly attracted widespread attention.
But instead of congratulating Felix on completing his university education, some social media users mocked his appearance, dressing and the fact that he was graduating later than his classmates.
Unknown to those making fun of him, however, was the difficult journey behind the photographs.
The tide turned after Mercy Ninian, an X user who said she knew Felix, revealed the hardship he had endured while pursuing his education.
According to Ninian, Felix battled severe financial difficulties during his university years and had to take on several menial jobs to survive and remain in school.
She said the young man fetched water, washed clothes for fellow students, hawked peanuts and other items and, at some point, slept in classrooms because of his financial circumstances.
His academic journey was also far from smooth.
Ninian explained that Felix struggled to pay his school fees after his initial admission and eventually ran into academic difficulties that led to his withdrawal from the university for failing to meet the required academic standard.
But Felix refused to surrender.
He reportedly rewrote the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination and eventually returned to the university to continue the education he had fought so hard to obtain.
The revelation changed the conversation online.
People who knew Felix began sharing stories about his struggles, including a former roommate who reportedly accommodated him for months during his first year.
Felix also responded to the viral post, making it clear that his delayed graduation was not because he lacked seriousness or commitment.
He explained that he was supposed to graduate with his classmates in the History Department in 2023 but fell behind academically. Rather than abandon his education, he continued fighting until he eventually completed his degree.
Then came the unexpected twist.
Popular X personality Wisdom Obi-Dickson, better known as Sir Dickson Wizarab, picked up Felix’s story and called on Nigerians to support the young graduate.
Wizarab made an initial personal donation and encouraged others to contribute towards helping Felix build a better future.
The appeal triggered a massive response.
Within hours, donations from Nigerians began pouring into Felix’s account as his story spread across X and beyond.
The fundraising quickly climbed into the millions before eventually crossing the N10 million mark.
By Thursday, Wizarab announced that Nigerians had collectively raised N14 million for Felix.
The development transformed what had started as a cruel social media joke into a remarkable demonstration of kindness.
Wizarab also indicated that Felix would receive financial guidance to help him manage and invest the money wisely.
Overwhelmed by the support, Felix thanked Wizarab and the Nigerians who rallied behind him, promising to make a video to properly appreciate everyone who contributed.
Felix Warns Against Fake Attack Report
But with his newfound popularity came another problem — fake reports.
Felix was forced to debunk claims circulating online that he had been attacked at his home.
He said he was safe and urged people not to exploit his situation to chase social media attention or spread false information.
The Promise To His Late Mother
Amid the dramatic turn in his fortunes, Felix also opened up about a promise he made to his late mother.
He revealed that he designed a poster on the day he signed out of university as a tribute to her.
According to him, he had promised his mother that he would not fail her, engage in illegal activities or bring disgrace to the family.
Reflecting on the events that followed his viral moment, Felix said the experience had strengthened his faith and reinforced his belief that perseverance and good character eventually pay off.
He urged others facing hardship not to give up and encouraged people to treat others with kindness.
‘I’m Not Competing With Anyone’
Felix has also rejected attempts by some social media users to compare his story with that of another person who had attracted attention online.
He stressed that he was not in competition with anyone and had no interest in determining who was more successful or deserving of public support.
For Felix, his unexpected windfall is not simply about money.
It is the latest chapter in a journey that took him from fetching water, washing clothes and selling peanuts to surviving university hardship, falling behind his classmates and eventually completing his degree.
The graduate who was mocked over his appearance is now at the centre of a massive show of public support.
