Three South Africans have been charged with killing a Nigerian student who doubled as aBolt e-hailing driver, Isaac Satlat.
The suspects, Dikeledi Mphela, 24; Goitsione Machidi, 25, and McClaren Mushwana, 30, appeared briefly in court in Pretoria, on Monday where they abandoned their bail applications.
Police also confirmed that a fourth suspect has handed himself over and is expected to appear in court.
The suspects had used a phone number not registered in the name of any of them to book Satlat’s ride last Wednesday.
With evil intent, they split themselves into two set using another car to trail that of the 22-year-old Nigerian, the National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana said.
According to prosecutors, two of the suspects entered Satlat’s vehicle, while the other two followed behind in a separate car.
However, along the line, the official account has it that the suspects forced Satlat to stop, strangled him to death, and robbed him of his phone and vehicle, which was later recovered.
Orijoreporter recalls that the lid on the crime was blown off by a dashcam video in the car, which recorded the incident and was shared publicly ensuing public outrage.
As per local report, the court adjourned the case to next Monday.
The deceased was from Plateau State and was due to graduate from a South African school next month after which he intended to relocate to Canada for further studies.
