The crisis rocking the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a fresh turn as Senator Saliu Mustapha, a key figure in the aggrieved G15 group, has dumped the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, announced his resignation from the APC on Thursday in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, attaching a resignation letter dated August 14, 2026, addressed to the chairman of APC, Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area.

The senator’s exit came amid the lingering battle within the party over the 2027 governorship ticket and the emergence of the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, as the APC flag bearer. Danladi-Salihu emerged as the party’s governorship candidate after the APC primary election.

The development has widened the crack between the governor’s camp and the G15/TOP bloc, a coalition of influential APC stakeholders who have opposed the process that produced Danladi-Salihu.

The group had accused the party leadership of favouring the Speaker, whom they viewed as the preferred candidate of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Mustapha, who was among the prominent voices within the G15/TOP movement, said his decision to leave the APC followed weeks of consultations with stakeholders, supporters and constituents across Kwara Central and beyond.

He said recent developments within the Kwara APC made it necessary for him to seek a new political direction, insisting that the decision was not taken lightly.

The senator said his political journey had always been guided by the interests of the people, adding that when a platform no longer reflects the values and aspirations of those he represents, it becomes necessary to chart a different course.

Mustapha thanked the APC leadership under President Bola Tinubu for the relationships and experiences gained during his time in the party.

He, however, assured his supporters and constituents that while his political platform had changed, his commitment to representing the people of Kwara Central remained unchanged.

His resignation is expected to further fuel speculations over the next political move of the G15 bloc and deepen the battle for control of the APC structure in Kwara ahead of the 2027 polls.
