Mrs. Lipolelo Thabane, estranged wife of Lesotho Prime Minister Tom Thabane, and her woman friend have been shot dead in an apparent assassination.

The 58-year-old was killed late on Wednesday, two days before her estranged husband’s inauguration, who won election earlier this month.

The deceased was Mr. Thabane’s first wife.

The newly elected PM according to AFP news agency is now living with his third wife, Liabiloe.

Late Lipolelo reportedly won a high court battle against her husband to secure the privileges of a First Lady, instead of the youngest wife Liabiloe,

Thabane and the deceased had been living separately since 2012 after he filed for a divorce which had yet to be granted by the courts.

Police spokesperson Clifford Molefe said Late Lipolelo was traveling home with a friend when both women where shot by an unknown assailant in the town of Masana, just outside the capital, Maseru.
Molefe said Lipolelo died on the scene while her friend was taken to a nearby hospital.

Lesotho has been on a political knife-edge since an attempted coup in 2014. It held elections last week, the third in five years.
