The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday announced the postponement of the Enugu East senatorial election earlier scheduled to hold today.
The suspension sprang from Enugu East senatorial candidate of the Labour Party, Elder Oyibo Chukwu’s killing.
The deceased was murdered in cold blood in an attack on his campaign vehicle by pitiless gunmen at Eke-Out Amechi-Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area on Wednesday.
The assailants didn’t spare Chukwu’s Personal Assistant, with whom he was in the vehicle. He was also killed, with both bodies and vehicle set ablaze.
Announcing the suspension, INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, said it has been postponed till March 11, the day the governorship and State Assembly polls are slated for.
The INEC boss, however, added that campaign in the senatorial district is free to continue until 24 hours before the election holds on the new date.
“I expect the party to conduct primaries as early as next week. The campaign that ended last night (Thursday) was for presidential and national Assembly elections and not for the state and houses of assembly elections,” he said.
