A man who allegedly travelled from Anambra State to Oyo State to avenge his brother’s death has been arrested by the police, with a pistol and a cartridge reportedly recovered from him.
The suspect was intercepted by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol during a stop-and-search operation along Ife Road while travelling in a commercial bus.
The Oyo State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a video shared on TikTok on Friday, saying the suspect’s responses during interrogation suggested that he was on a revenge mission.
In the video, the suspect explained that he was working in Benue State when he received information that his brother had died at a school in Awka, Anambra State, allegedly after being killed by another person.
“I was working in Benue State. My brother was in school in Awka. I had information that he just died in the school. That somebody killed him in the school,” he said.
He further disclosed that his mother died a few weeks after his brother’s death, adding to the family tragedy.
According to the suspect, he later received information that the person he believed was responsible for his brother’s death was living in Oyo State.
“Last month, I had information that the boy is living in a state, Yoruba State. I said I will find out that place where he is living,” he said.
The suspect confirmed during questioning that he was heading to Oyo State when police operatives intercepted him.
Asked how he obtained the firearm, he claimed he bought it from a friend for ₦20,000.
“I bought it from my friend. I don’t know, maybe he’s a hunter,” he said.
The interrogation also took a fresh turn when the suspect was asked whether he belonged to a cult group. He answered in the affirmative, identifying the group as the Vikings confraternity.
However, he could not confirm whether his late brother was also a cult member, explaining that they attended different schools and that he was not present when the alleged killing occurred.
“Maybe he belongs, maybe he does not belong because I was not there with him. I was not in the same school with him,” he said.
The police spokesperson said the suspect was undergoing investigation to establish his connections and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police have yet to establish publicly whether the person the suspect allegedly intended to confront was responsible for his brother’s death.
