A man has been jailed in Ghana after his attempts to kill the country’s president in a church failed.

On Sunday, 36-year-old Charles Antwi(pictured) was arrested in possession of a pistol in a church usually attended by President John Dramani Mahama and his family.

Though President Mahama was absent at the church service, however, on Tuesday a court in Accra sentenced Antwi to 10-year imprisonment after he confessed that he tried to kill the President, and had been at the church on four occasions to execute his plan.

Antwi’s defence of his action during the trial raised suspicion about his mental health.

He said, “I wanted to kill President Mahama to take over his position.

“Trying to kill the president was a way of fighting for the nation. I was to be sworn in as president when president John Evans Atta Mills died.”
