One person has been left dead in the attack carried out by hippopotamuses on Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.
Hippopotamuses live in river, around it, lakes and swamps.
Due to flooding around the Kiri Dam in Shelleng, the animals were displaced and were roaming about in the communities including its farmlands and residential areas to the point of moving into homes, a statement credited to the Chairman of Guyuk Local Government, Mr Shalom Kassa, claimed.
Kassa said one of the animals killed a young man in Banjiram community.
He reports that fears now gripped the people of the areas as the animals posed a serious danger to the public, and are causing havoc to livestock and farmlands.
“This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods; the animals are destroying farmlands, invading flooded homes, and endangering residents and livestock,” he said.
He expressed concern about the inability of residents to defend themselves from the unwelcome animals due to existing laws that prohibited the killing or harming of wildlife, including hippopotamuses.
“We are appealing to the state Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” he pleaded.
