A mobile phone battery explosion has led to a fire outbreak at Tecno Complex in Mokola Roundabout, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Oyo State Fire Services Agency’s Chairman, Moroof Akinwande, shared this information in a statement he released where he said the incident happened on Monday, June 8, at 20:15 hours.

Akinwande said fire personnel acting on a distress call moved to the scene as a shop in the complex was engulfed by fire.

He remarked that preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a mobile phone battery explosion which ignited nearby combustible materials.

“At exactly 20:15 hours on Monday, 8th June, 2026, the Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call from Mr Oluyomade Adepeju reporting a shop fire at Tecno Complex Roundabout, Mokola, Ibadan.

“Fire personnel led by ACFS Amoo promptly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the second shop located on the upper floor of the commercial building was engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the premises.

“The firefighters swiftly contained and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties.

“Preliminary fire investigation revealed that the fire was caused by the explosion of a mobile phone battery, which ignited nearby combustible materials.

“No casualty was recorded during the incident. The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at 22:58 hours and resumed operational standby,” the statement read.
