The Managing Director of Ecobank Nigeria Limited, Mr Charles Kie, is suing the Inspector-General of Police; the Lagos State Commissioner of Police; DCP Bolaji Salami; and one Akin Jegede, alleging they are stalking and harassing him.

In the suit filed alongside EcoBank, and through Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), Kie says he is being stalked and harassed by the police over $10.5m in the account of a customer of the bank, saying the above mentioned cops and Jegede are mounting pressure on him to “illegally” transfer the said sum to a third party.

Citing an instance, the bank boss said some policemen on September 28 besieged the Corporate Headquarters of Ecobank on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos, seeking to arrest him for refusing to comply with their directive to illegally transfer the money.

He added that in their desperation, the police bribed the security personnel in his office, asking them to disclose his movement and residential address to them.

Kie alleged that the invasion of his office by the police disrupted activities in the bank on that day, adding that he has been living in constant state of panic and fear ever since.

He therefore sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the police from “harassing, oppressing, detaining, arresting and/or intimidating the applicants or their officers or interfering, in any way, with the personal liberty of the applicants or the smooth running of their business in any manner whatsoever that will breach the fundamental rights of the applicants.”

Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos in his ruling on Thursday, ordered the maintenance of status quo, pending the final determination of Kie’s N100m suit against the police.

The judge adjourned hearing in the case till November 9.
