A Nigerian Navy lieutenant, Lieutenant James Emmanuel, has landed in police custody after he was allegedly caught with a large consignment of suspected cannabis along the East-West Road.
Lieutenant James Emmanuel was arrested in the early hours of Sunday, September 6, 2026, alongside a 51-year-old driver, Felix Dickson, during an intensive patrol operation.
The suspects were reportedly intercepted by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol, who allegedly discovered 248 moulds of suspected cannabis, popularly known as “Scottish Loud”, concealed inside five Ghana-Must-Go bags.
The consignment was reportedly being transported in a Toyota Tacoma Hilux fitted with a siren, raising suspicion among the patrol team.
According to reports, preliminary investigation indicated that Dickson had allegedly been engaged to transport the consignment from Lagos to Port Harcourt.
Emmanuel is reportedly serving with the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Ogun.
Following the arrest, the suspects, vehicle and recovered exhibits were handed over to the Police Violent Crime Response Unit for further investigation.
The case has sparked fresh concerns over the alleged involvement of serving security personnel in the illicit drug trade, while investigators are expected to establish the source of the suspected cannabis, its intended destination and the roles allegedly played by the suspects.
Emmanuel and Dickson remain suspects, and the allegations against them have not been established in court.
