The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on Nigerians to speak up whenever their rights are violated, revealing that more than 15,000 consumer complaints have been successfully resolved by its Lagos Zonal Office.
The commission said the cases were settled through complaints submitted via its online platform and direct engagements with consumers who sought intervention over disputed transactions, poor services and unfair business practices.
Lagos Zonal Coordinator of the FCCPC, Dr. Olubunmi Otti, disclosed the figure during a media briefing at the commission’s office in Ikeja, where she urged consumers not to suffer silently when businesses fail to meet expected standards.
Otti explained that consumers should first approach the affected company or service provider to resolve any dispute before seeking the commission’s intervention if the matter remains unresolved.
She said those bringing complaints before the FCCPC must provide necessary details, including the business location, proof of purchase, amount involved and the kind of solution they want.
According to her, the thousands of resolved cases demonstrate the commission’s commitment to protecting Nigerians and ensuring businesses operate responsibly.
The FCCPC boss reminded consumers that the commission derives its powers from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, which empowers it to protect consumer welfare and promote fair competition.
She warned against practices that harm consumers and weaken competition, including monopoly abuse, price manipulation, bid rigging, market sharing and other unfair market activities.
Otti encouraged Nigerians to report issues such as refusal to issue refunds, deceptive product claims, hidden charges, arbitrary price increases and the sale of substandard goods.
She also highlighted the importance of proper product labelling, stressing that information on products should be provided in English to help consumers make informed choices before making purchases.
The zonal coordinator said the commission uses different approaches to settle disputes, including negotiations, mediation, conciliation, direct discussions with businesses and administrative hearings.
She assured consumers that the FCCPC would continue to defend their interests and ensure they receive value for their money.
“Whenever consumers are not satisfied with the services rendered or provided, they are encouraged to come to FCCPC,” Otti said.
She added that consumer safety and satisfaction remain central to the commission’s activities.
Consumers can submit complaints through the FCCPC’s online portal or visit its Lagos office in Ikeja for assistance.
